The Issue

In recent times, the cost of food has skyrocketed, causing concern for many residents of Beaver Falls, PA. I find myself increasingly worried about my ability to afford fresh, healthy food for my family. What if I could turn my own backyard into a sustainable source of produce and protein? This is not just my dream, but a feasible solution for family food security in our community.

Urban agriculture is a sustainable practice that allows individuals to grow their own food, keep chickens for fresh eggs, and maintain beehives for honey and crop pollination. Permitting activities such as cultivating crops, backyard chicken keeping, and beekeeping within city limits could significantly impact the lives of those who struggle with food costs. Currently, however, strict local ordinances make it challenging, if not impossible, to pursue these activities within Beaver Falls.

There are compelling arguments for supporting urban agriculture: for instance, it increases community resilience, promotes healthy eating, and reduces the environmental impact of transporting food over long distances. According to the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, "urban farming creates green spaces and reduces food deserts, directly contributing to healthier communities."

Success in other cities has shown that urban agriculture can be safe and beneficial. Pittsburgh, for example, has recently embraced urban farming allowing residents to grow food and raise chickens. Their example demonstrates that with sensible regulations, urban agriculture can thrive.

We propose that the city of Beaver Falls revises its laws to allow and encourage urban agriculture. Implementing clear guidelines for crop-growing, beekeeping, and chicken-keeping can ensure public safety and peace. For example, restricting the number of chickens per household or requiring bee yards to be a certain distance from property lines are strategies that have worked well elsewhere.

I urge Beaver Falls' city authorities to consider updating our ordinances in favor of urban farming. Allowing residents to cultivate their own food would not only empower individuals and families like mine but also strengthen our community as a whole. Please support us in this initiative by signing this petition. Together, we can champion a more sustainable and healthy future for Beaver Falls.
