Permit Students to Use Cell Phones During Breaks at School

Permit Students to Use Cell Phones During Breaks at School

The Issue

My son, like all other students in North Myrtle Beach, SC, is currently prohibited from using his cell phone during school hours. This includes breaks such as lunch or free blocks. I firmly believe that students should have the right to use their phones during these periods to connect with family, friends, potential employers and more.

The reason given for this ban is the prevention of incidents being recorded and shared on social media platforms in case of fights or other disturbances. However, this approach seems misguided. Instead of punishing the entire student body for a potential incident caused by a few individuals, we should focus on addressing those specific issues separately.

In today's digital age where communication is largely facilitated through technology, it's essential that our children are allowed to stay connected during their free time at school. According to a study by Pew Research Center (2018), 95% of teens have access to a smartphone and 45% say they are online 'almost constantly'. By denying them access during breaks at school we're not only isolating them but also potentially hindering their ability to learn how to use these tools responsibly.

It's time we reassess this policy and allow our students the freedom they deserve while ensuring proper measures are taken against misuse instead of blanket bans. Please sign this petition if you agree that North Myrtle Beach schools should permit students' cell phone usage during allotted breaks.
