With the unnerving increase in cases of school shootings throughout the nation, I, like any concerned parent, would feel an immense sense of relief knowing my children can quickly and easily reach me should they need to during an emergency.

Recognizing that currently schools in Bristol, TN have strict policies regarding the possession of cell phones, this petition seeks to address and modify those rules for the enhancement of student safety. Today, cell phones are much more than communication devices; they are compact, quick contact lifelines during times of crisis.

According to studies conducted by Pew Research Center, 95% of teenagers have access to a smartphone, and these devices have become a vital part of their lives (Source: Pew Research Center, 2018). On an average, law enforcement's response time to an urgent situation is estimated at around 9 minutes. While every second is invaluable during an emergency, having immediate access to a phone can save lives by enabling students to inform their parents and authorities promptly (Source: American Police Beat Magazine, 2006).

Let's make student safety a priority and modify existing regulations to allow students to have their cell phones in school. This modification will not only heighten peace of mind for parents, but will also create an environment where students are better prepared to respond to emergencies.
