The Issue

Starting next week for the 25-26 school year,  Knox County high school students will face the restriction of not being able to use their personal phones during school hours. For many, this is not just an inconvenience but a barrier to staying connected with family, engaging with music for relaxation, and utilizing their own devices to conduct effective research for school projects.

In today's digital age, phones serve as essential tools for communication and learning. The ability to contact family is crucial for students who may have responsibilities at home or need to coordinate safe transportation. Allowing phone access can provide peace of mind not only for students but for their families, knowing they can easily communicate in times of need.

Moreover, students having increased access to their own resources, many of which are blocked on the Knox County devices enhances the quality of work per student.

According to the Pew Research Center, 95% of teens have access to a smartphone, and these devices are increasingly being used for educational purposes. Educational technology can expand students' horizons and enhance their learning experiences, making it imperative to embrace these tools rather than limit them.

Knox County Schools should implement a policy that allows students to use their phones responsibly during school hours. This can be achieved by establishing clear guidelines for appropriate use, ensuring that the primary focus remains on education while granting students the autonomy to manage their time and resources effectively.

We believe that the new phone policy implemented across all of Knox County’s schools fails to consider the unique needs of each individual school community.

Knox County is made up of a wide range of schools — each with different environments, leadership, student populations, and cultures. What works for one high school may not work for another. A blanket rule that removes all access to phones for every student in every school ignores the critical role that principals, teachers, and even students play in shaping the learning environment that works best for them.

Sign this petition to urge Knox County Schools to adapt to modern educational needs and empower students by permitting phone access throughout the school day.
