Permit Felons to Serve in the Military with Adequate Training

Permit Felons to Serve in the Military with Adequate Training
The Issue
Personal experiences have exposed me to the reality of many individuals, who despite their felon status, remain deeply devoted and eager to serve our nation. Our nation can greatly benefit from the dedication and zeal of these men and women who, unfortunately, have been involved in felonies at some point in their lives. If given an opportunity, I believe, they can be of great service to our country. Their commitment can significantly contribute to the human resource needs of our military. Of course, more comprehensive and extensive training should be provided to this group, ensuring they are well-equipped to serve properly and responsibly.
In 2016, the National Institute of Justice reported that the annual cost per inmate in the U.S. was about $33,274. By contrast, the cost of training a single military recruit is roughly $18,324 (US army data, 2016). This presents a crucial perspective - by providing felons with a chance to serve in the military, we not only channel their dedication positively but also potentially save a significant amount of national resources.
Every human deserves a chance at redemption and should be given opportunities to serve and give back to their community, even more so when their willingness to serve includes the possibility of risking their lives for the benefit of the nation. Let us rally behind these dedicated individuals, using this platform to voice our belief that these individuals, despite their past misdeeds, can and should be given a chance to serve in our military, after appropriate and meticulous training. Let us sign this petition and make a move towards a more inclusive and understanding society.
