The Issue

Many senior citizens face the growing challenge of affording basic necessities, let alone a property tax that increases year after year. These taxes threaten the independence and financial security that seniors have spent a lifetime building. Seniors are forced to pay property taxes annually even after purchasing homes with income that has already been taxed, essentially denying genuine ownership. This financial burden acts as an annual wealth tax, applied without considering an individual's income or ability to pay.

Senior citizens, individuals who have contributed immensely to our community and economy, find themselves grappling with the stress of meeting these obligations on fixed or declining incomes. According to a 2022 study by the AARP, over 10 million seniors were reported as being food insecure due to financial constraints, much of which is exacerbated by property tax burdens.

We have a responsibility to support our elderly population, ensuring they can age with dignity and comfort. Many states have implemented property tax relief programs, yet these often have strict qualifications and limited benefits. By completely abolishing property taxes for seniors aged 65 and over, we can help provide them with the financial breathing room they desperately need.

With 48% of Americans aged 65 and older living in their own homes, freeing them from this recurring burden would significantly improve their quality of life. Seniors should be spending their golden years enjoying their accomplishments, not worrying about whether they can afford to stay in their home each tax cycle.

It's time to take action and support our seniors by permanently ending property taxes for them. Sign this petition to urge legislators and policymakers to stand up for our elders and provide them with the financial security and peace of mind they deserve.
