Permanent Cricket Facility with Synthetic Turf in Barrie

The Issue

Cricket, cherished worldwide and proudly Canada's inaugural national sport, has found a passionate home in our city. However, our current cricket facilities at Maitland Park present significant challenges that hinder the growth and enjoyment of the sport in our community.

The sole clay cricket pitch at Maitland Park, initially intended as a temporary solution over a decade ago, thanks to the effort by the Barrie Cricket League, now struggles to meet the burgeoning demand for cricket in Barrie. We face numerous obstacles:

Waterlogging Issues: Excessive rain causes prolonged periods of waterlogging, often leading to the cancellation or delay of cricket matches.

Availability Challenges: Sharing the space with a baseball diamond and the increase number of people and teams in Barrie looking for a space to play cricket, results in frequent scheduling conflicts, restricting access for cricket enthusiasts.

Maintenance Demands: Clay surfaces demand extensive upkeep, consuming significant time and energy resources.

Safety Concerns: After rainfall, the unmaintained clay pitches become hazardous, jeopardizing the safety of cricket players.

Shortened Playing Window: Barrie's climate delays the preparation of clay pitches until late June, offering only a brief period of approximately 2 -3 months for cricket play each year.

Space Limitations: The confined area at Maitland Park frequently causes cricket balls to stray into surrounding homes and roads, posing safety risks. The presence of large bushes often leads to the loss of valuable cricket balls, increasing the financial burden on the sport.

Despite these challenges, we have persevered and Barrie Area Malayali Association(BAMA) and Barrie Strikers, the official team of BAMA, successfully organized a one-day, six-team Cricket Tournament “Barrie Premier League - Season 1”  last July. Despite navigating the obstacles mentioned here, the event was a resounding success. This year, we are excited to announce a larger-scale event: ”Barrie Premier League - Season 2 a two-day Cricket Tournament featuring 16 teams scheduled for August 17-18, 2024. Another one-day tournament is scheduled for this year, in addition to BPL- Season 2, during the summer months. We are also in discussions regarding organizing a third tournament this year. These events demonstrate not only our commitment to cricket but also the community's unwavering interest in the game.

A solution exists in the form of dedicated space with a synthetic turf pitch, a proven alternative widely utilized in other parts of the province and around the world. Such a facility in the City of Barrie, dedicated to Cricket, would alleviate these challenges, offering a safe, accessible, and sustainable space for cricket enthusiasts.

We, the Barrie Area Malayali Association(BAMA) and Barrie Strikers Cricket Team urge you to support our endeavor to propel the sport of cricket forward in our community. Join us in petitioning the City of Barrie to expedite the development of a permanent synthetic turf pitch cricket facility by the upcoming summer season.

Together, let's pave the way for cricket's continued growth and enjoyment in Barrie.
