The Issue

This is personal not only for me but should be for everyone. We humans create such things that continue to harm our environment and animals. The Earth is here providing for us, why do we kill and take from it? The endangered vaquita porpoise in the Gulf of California is on the brink of extinction, with fewer than 10 individuals estimated to remain in the wild.

Gill nets, widely used in fishing, are one of the leading threats to the survival of these gentle creatures. These nets, designed to catch fish by their gills, do not discriminate between target fish and other marine life. As a result, vaquitas and other non-target species often get caught and drown. Despite international outcry and conservation efforts, these deadly nets continue to be used, driving vaquitas closer to extinction every day. To this day there are only 6-8, remaining in the world.

The vaquita is not just any animal; it's a symbol of the dire consequences that uncontrolled human activities can have on our planet. With each vaquita lost, we lose a part of our planet's rich biodiversity and a reminder of our responsibility as stewards of the Earth. Preserving the vaquita means more than just saving a species; it represents the fight to maintain balance in our marine ecosystems.

We call on the Government of Mexico to take immediate and decisive action by implementing an official law that permanently bans the use of gill nets in the habitats of these porpoises. By doing so, they can give the vaquita a fighting chance to recover and thrive. It's vital we use more sustainable fishing methods that protect the diverse marine life of the Gulf without destroying it.

Join me in urging the Mexican authorities to protect the vaquita and ensure that future generations can witness the diversity and wonder of the Gulf of California's marine life. Sign this petition to save the vaquita from the brink of extinction, and call for a future where humans and animals can coexist in harmony. Your signature can make a difference.
