Replace “Aunt Jemima” with a B. Smith X PepsiCo Partnership for Brand Equity !
The Issue
Quaker Oats have agreed to bring down their racist image of a minstrel character named Jemima - This did not come easy and has been a long lasting initiative B.Smith who was saddened after hearing a young women’s story of feeling like that was the only famous black woman in the industry. She took action over 10 years ago engaging “PepsiCo” and drew strength from from other strong black women. It is not simply enough to replace one image with another , there should be business and equity partnerships after their benefitting from our embarrassment. B. Smith has lead the way and will not be here to see the fruits of her labor , however it is our turn to step up!
B. Smith has been at the forefront of this with her record breaking career in Lifestyle and Cuisine. Her Washington D.C. New York City and Sag Harbor Locations celebrated the black American experience for over 20 years. She was a true maverick in fashion , flight and home design.
She was taken too soon by another civil rights crisis of our generation, Alzheimer’s, in February of 2020. This disease disproportionately effects black women and financially ruins families already in distress.
She is a role model that we can all look up to and learn from and should grace the brand in a collaboration to not only correct but improve the honesty of PepsiCo and Quaker.
