Make Cheetos use microbial enzymes instead of animal-derived variants.

The Issue

Many Muslims and vegans can’t eat the chips that Cheetos offers. This is because they use animal-derived enzymes in their chips. If they switch to microbial enzymes, which is derived from bacteria, Muslims and vegans can eat their chips.

Here are some reasons why Cheetos (subsidiary of Frito-Lays which is in turn a subsidiary of PepsiCo) should make this switch to microbial enzymes:

  1. Almost 2 billion Muslims are restricted by the laws of their religion so that they cannot eat anything not classified as “Halal”. I am aware that many ignore this law, but if informed they will stop eating Cheetos. For animal-derived enzymes to be halal, it must be sourced from a “Halal” animal. In the food industry, Companies manly use rennet from cows and pigs to make enzymes. Since pigs are not permissible for consumption in Islam, Muslims cannot eat enzymes from it. Furthermore, the cow must be slaughtered according to halal standards, which most companies won’t abide by. So, I am suggesting the use of microbial enzymes. In contrast to animal-derived enzymes, microbial enzymes do not use animals in the process of making it. Instead, microbial enzymes can be made from bacteria. Neither Muslims nor vegans have objections to consuming bacteria.
  2. As aforementioned, almost 2 billion people in the world are Muslim. And that number is rapidly rising. So, if Cheetos switches the type of enzyme, it will gain a lot of new customers. As I have tried their chips in the past, I can almost guarantee most of those customers will be recurring buyers.

In conclusion, there are many benefits for both Cheetos and people if they make the switch. Cheetos will gain new customers, and people will get all of those delicious snacks. So, it is in the better interests for Cheetos to switch to microbial enzymes.
