Change the Pepsi and Mountain Dew logo's back to their 2000's look.
The Issue
Oversimplified logo's have gotten out of hand. Designers are opting for a more boring and bland logo over something much more creative and exciting. An example of this is Pepsi and Mountain Dew. Back in the 2000's, Pepsi and Mountain Dew stood out as some of the most creative and outgoing logo's in the soda market. The logo's made me genuinely want to go out and buy one of these drinks. Pepsi had a huge "Pepsi Globe" on it that was 3D, and there were a bunch of ice spikes coming out of the background, while also having the recognizable font with the words, 'PEPSI". It made me think of how much I would want a ice cold Pepsi and how great the flavors are. With the Pepsi logo today, it makes me just wanna drink water. The background is a solid blue, with the logo being small, and having a solid 3 tone design. It kind of reminds me of when an Announcer at a wresting competition is hyping up someone by saying stuff like, "AT A MASSIVE 280 POUNDS, BUILT LIKE STEEL FROM A BLACKSMITH, WILL CUT YOU IN HALF WITH A MERE THOUGHT, IT'SSSSS "Bill". And here comes Bill, at an astonishing 5'4, with lymphedema in his left leg, age 32 and getting his college degree in Liberal Arts, favorite color grey, impressing no one but himself. There is so much potential in the description of "Bill" but when he comes out, he's just bland with nothing special about him.
This is what it feels like looking at the Pepsi and Mountain Dew logo's. Even though the Mountain Dew logo is much better than the Pepsi logo, it still feels like it is going down the wrong path. When the product first launched, it had the iconic person with the bottle on it, Which you guys have put on "Mountain Dew Throwback" which I applaud you for. Over time, you began tweaking it just a slight amount, by curving it, adding lines under it, etc. But once you got to 1999, hit the sweet spot, it was so bold, with a very iconic font that makes me think of the sweet taste of playing Xbox and PlayStation. And then came 2005, You changed the logo to make it curved and have a slight yellow highlight, These were amazing logo's that no other Soda brand, let alone company had. They stood out among all the other Soda's in the isle and made the customer immediately draw their eyes to it. But then came 2009, you decided to change the word "Mountain" to "MTN". This was confusing to me at first. It looked like a Mountain Dew logo, but it just felt off. I know people who have gone as far as to call it MTN Dew, like actually pronouncing the word MTN like "Mitten". Of course that is few and far between, but it all just felt off for me. The old logo stretched across the can, saying to the world "HELLO! I AM MOUNTAIN DEW, ONE OF THE GREATEST SOFT DRINKS ON EARTH!" and this new logo just didn't say that. It was more of a, "Hey guys, I'm MTN Dew now! You get it? Cause it's short for Mountain! I think." And then in 2017, you made me audibly say in the middle of Walmart, "Why? What a weird color scheme!" You changed the can to have some really weird Off Lime-Green color that was like if someone took the can into Adobe Photoshop and cranked up the Contrast to 100%. It still to this day makes me double check if its not some "Super Lime" flavor or something.
In conclusion, these new logo's are so much more bland and boring than the ones from the 2000's. They make me want to just get another soda that has a interesting logo, showing off how great and unique the flavor is, or just drink water. I really hope you consider changing the logo back to the way it was, as marketing wise, (besides the logo just being better in general), it would pull on the nostalgia strings of all the kids who grew up in the 2000's, drinking some of the best soda's on earth. (Kind of like how Pizza Hut brought back the Iconic 70's logo, which makes me want go order from them right now). Have a good day, and I hope to see these logo's make a return.
