Free Recycling for Wichita residents
The Issue
Other cities around Wichita, are offered free curbside Recycling bins, while in Wichita residents must pay extra to recycle from home. Without the local convenience of multiple near by Recycling plants, and with the current Pandemic, it is more accessible and convenient for residents to do their recycling right from there home. Recycling has massive positive impacts on nature, natural resources, reduces energy consumption, reduces the size of landfills, minimizes pollution, nourishes the soil, saves money, prevents loss of biodiversity, and many other positive effects come from recycling. If we can allow Wichita residents to curbside recycle for free a large amount, approximately 80%, of house holds would recycle.
Below are some facts from https://recyclingpartnership.org/stateofcurbside/
Out of 37.4 million tons available to be recycled, 20 million tons are thrown in the trash due to lack of access and participation
If these 20 million tons were recycled, it would:
Generate 370,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs
Reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 96 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent
Conserve an annual energy equivalent of 154 million barrels of oil
And achieve the equivalent of taking more than 20 million cars off U.S. highways
Locally, this will help with the large amount of air pollution and damage to the Arkansas river and its ecosystem. By signing this petition we are working together to allow Wichita residents more convenience and willingness to recycle, by offering a free curbside recycling service.
