Show Cecilia Gimenez that people are more important than paintings

The Issue

Everyone's heard about the botched restoration of the "valuable" fresco of Jesus. The story goes that a well-meaning woman took it upon herself to restore the painting (which had gone unmaintained for years), and the end result has spread far and wide across the internet. What people don't know is that the woman responsible for the job has become so overwhelmed with shame and anxiety that she has gone into self-exile in a "blanket nest of shame".

The painting that launched all of these news articles and all of this outrage and humor had been so ill-maintained that huge patches of it were missing. In comparison, the fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (a much larger piece, and much older) has been carefully preserved and restored year after year. If this small piece was so valuable and important in the history of art, why did it not deserve some small measure of the same treatment?

Cecilia Gimenez did what she thought was right. She put in an effort to save a piece of art history, and has been treated to ridicule and torment because of it. In the end, she simply made a mistake. She doesn't deserve this. No one deserves this. Sign this petition and maybe we can show her that there are lots of people out there who support her and value her life and feelings above a piece of art.
