A Call to Action to Save One of the World’s Best Island from Verge of Extinction
The Issue
This is in connection with the petition to save the world’s best islands from the verge of extinction.
Most of the people or rather, the government and constituents wanted so much development of an area or an island that they never even think about how it will affect the environment and the people in the long run.
In the development of a peace, an island in particular, there are always negative effects such as the following: urban growth becomes uncontrollable, weak ordinances from the government that leads to different kinds of pollutions.
We, the people might just want to lift up the life or the kind of life that we had today by developing our places, but with development comes the destruction of ecosystems or the environment which could lead to the destruction of mankind in the future.
Boracay Island is one of the most beautiful and exquisite island/beach in the world and is inhabited by indigenous native people, popularly known as the “ATI’s”, if Boracay will be destroyed its populace will be destroyed too. If we want to help Mother Nature, we must protect the place and the people.
While there are people who don’t care, there are a number of people who wanted to save Mother Nature and came up with a petition that hopes to preserve nature, particularly the Boracay Island.
The petition started after realizing that damages are being done to the island. There is an unstoppable construction of high rise buildings on both sides of every road. Based from CECAM (Coastal Ecosystem Conservation and Adaptive Management after they analyze satellite images, they calculated that coral cover in Boracay declined by 70.5% between 1988 to 2011. They also noted that the highest decline happened between 2008 and 2011, as tourist arrivals rose by 38.4%. The island is also experiencing beach erosion white would endanger the white sand shoreline in the future.
Boracay bags the following awards; No. 1 Beach Island in the World (2012), No. 2 Best Island in the world (2013), No. 12 Best Island in the World (2014), No.1 Beach in Asia, White Beach Balabag (2015) and so on. With these awards, we cannot ignore the fact that the island is on the verge destruction, and we must do something to preserve what is left of it. We must save the whole island with its ecosystem and native populace. That is where the petition takes place. These are the proposals of the petition; Environmental Sustainability (Abolish Building Permits in Boracay Island now!), this aims to preserve what is left of the island, to save and protect wildlife species from land to sea, to stop continuing coastal and ecological degradation and to stop beach and sea coral erosion. Another comprehensive for proposal would be the Tourism Economic Sustainability (Build Boracay-Aklan Mainland Bridge), this is to reduce carrying capacity of the island, to relocate government and business workforce residency to the mainland, to expand tourist economic growth and infrastructure development throughout the coastal mainland of Aklan mainly in the municipalities of Malay, Nabas and Buruanga and to link travel mode in promoting other mainland tourist attractions and of course other things that has to do with connecting the island to the mainland by bridge. Last but not the least comprehensive proposal is the Social and Cultural Sustainability which is the restoration in Indigenous People (Ati’s) and Natural Eco-Heritage.
To save Boracay Island is on our hands now; our support to this petition will put pressure on our national and local government to make an immediate solution to end this unstoppable mega-construction and other elements of destruction. We aim to start a good example of global unity to protect the remaining natural forest land of this amazing island from the verge of extinction so the rest neighboring islands can pave its way to sustainable and balanced tourism development.
Your decision lies on your own hands but let us be aware of what is going on around us and educate ourselves of the impact of destruction of our environment to the people and to those generations that would come. Let us be wise enough to protect and save not only ourselves but the generations that would come.
