Save Historic Depot Ave/Highfield Drive!

Save Historic Depot Ave/Highfield Drive!
The Issue
We the undersigned OPPOSE the Falmouth EDIC’s proposal to build up to EIGHTY single-room micro apartments in either a very large 4-story building, or two buildings on a small wooded parcel adjacent the historic railroad station building on Depot Avenue (behind the Inn on the Square). The current zoning for the 1.5 acre site allows for a maximum of SIX residential units per acre. This proposal calls for rental apartments with month-to-month tenancy, which will appeal to transient tenants. While creating affordable housing options is very important to our town, we believe that it should be achieved in a reasonable way. This site is inappropriate for a variety of reasons, beginning with the introduction of 80 (or more) vehicles to the already choked intersection of Palmer Avenue, Depot Avenue and Main Street, the unclear parking situation for so many cars (the proposal calls for approximately 50 spaces, which would force the balance to park on Depot Ave, in the Queen’s Byway parking lot, or somewhere else), the construction of a large, 4-story building completely out of character for this tiny historic neighborhood and nearby Main Street, the placement of a transient population directly adjacent a school campus, and many other issues. To this date, Falmouth EDIC has neglected to perform adequate community outreach, holding “public” informational meetings without notifying the closest neighbors to the site. This is a reckless proposal that impacts all Falmouth residents concerned with our significant Palmer Ave/Main Street traffic issues, the safety of our children, the protection of sensitive historic areas and the application of sensible development policies.
