Tell PETA to oppose the Breed Specific Legislation on dogs
The Issue
Dear PETA,
In the last few years alone I have become more knowledgeable in regards to the horrible pains and sufferings we place on our fellow non-human animals. Not just in our country, but all over the world. A lot of that knowledge I have obtained from following your organization. Over all it was great to see such an organization uncovering the darkness that lurks behind the scenes of factory farms, experiment laboratories, trophy hunting, the use of animals in zoo's, SeaWorld, and all other animal welfare issues. Your research and your work has helped me make better decisions in my own life that could help animals all over the world. For that I thank you!
Although I am fond of your work, I never agreed with your logic on euthanasia. As a person who has watched friends and family members over come their illnesses, who have continued to fight for their lives until the very end, who have over come traumatic experiences, I feel as if our non-human animal companions absolutely share our will to survive. If you had seen my dog, who was euthanized based on a decision made by my parents, fighting the Veterinarian on that table like my father had, you may have changed your mind too. But that is not my greatest issue here.
I am appalled to discover that you have recently sided with Breed Specific Legislation. Although I understand your thought process behind the matter, I do not believe you are being logical. In the 1990's German Shepherds were ousted as aggressive but since then have proven to be intelligent and devoted family pet's. Dobermans were bred as protection dogs and were also characterized as aggressive but yet have good natured temperaments. Even Dalmatians have been targeted as being aggressive. Each dog has a history and each dog has the capability to be aggressive. This years fad is the Pit Bull.
By supporting the Breed Specific Legislations are we not fueling that fire? Are we not continuing the stereo type of aggressiveness in pit bulls? Are we not continuing the hype of dog fighting? By showing more Pit Bull family love, encouraging more Pit Bull adoptions, by sharing stories of Pit Bulls such as Sox and Hector, Cherry, Georgia, Halle, and all the other adopted dogs from Michael Vick's fighting ring, do we not educate the uninformed? Stories of how these "Monsters" turned into Teddy Bears all because they were given a chance. That’s how you break the stigma! That's how stories of biting German Shepherds, attacking Dobermans, and yes even Mauling Pit Bulls fade away into the ibis of the "misconception."
I strongly hope you do reconsider your stand on Breed Specific Legislation. In the past it was the Mastiff, the German Shepard, the Husky, the Rottweiler, and today it's the Pit Bull. How long before its all dogs? Any dog? What would our world be like when we come home from work and no longer have that joyful hello, that wagging tail, an excited bark telling us they're so happy we're home. Won't you miss those early morning's when your companion drags you out of bed exclaiming "There's life to live, so let's live it!" What about those autumn walks with your little love bug at your side. Most of all, nothing in the world beats those late night cuddles with your furry friend. Tears in my eye's, watching as my fur-baby lays her head on my lap, I think of a world without her. No she is not a Pit Bull, but how long until she's next?? I'll fight for her just like I'll fight for all dog's. And regardless of the stigma you and the rest of society feeds, I hope to open my home to another dog, maybe even a Pit. And I'll fight for them too!
If you continue to support the Breed Specific Legislation you loose my support and the support of my friends and family. I'm sure I will not be alone in this. I also do not believe you will read this letter. In the small chance that you do, I hope it touches you and breaks your heart almost as much as it broke mine to write it. PETA: People for the "Ethical" Treatment of Animals… Denying an animal the love it deserves is not ethical. Discrimination is not ethical.
Sincerely,
Extremely Disappointed
