Over 10,000 horses are killed every year in Australia after being discarded from the racing industry (Animal Justice Party, 2020). According to PETA Australia, whipping is “the most visible form of pain inflicted on horses”, highlighting the pain, fear, and suffering horses endure affects them both mentally and physically (PETA Australia, 2020).

A study conducted by the University of Melbourne found 50% of horses had blood present in their windpipe, similarly, 90% of horses had blood deeper in their lungs (Animals Australia, 2020). These statistics expose the harsh reality of the racing industry, uncovering how horses are forcibly raced and suffer both mentally and physically. Racing is a  significant problem for animal welfare as horses are denied basic rights and treated as economic commodities.

There are no reasons which justify exploiting innocent animals for human amusement and profit. We must work together to create strong laws which ban painful instruments in the racing industry to ensure horses are not subject to pain and suffering. Horses are sentient beings and they experience emotions just like us. They don’t deserve to be treated as if they are machines working in an industry where they put their bodies and lives on the line.

Stop horse racing for human benefit and treating horses as economic commodities. Horse racing is abuse in all aspects and abuse is a felony. This is the beginning of the end of horse racing!!
