The Issue

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is one of the biggest animal organizations in the world, being described as “by far the most successful radical organization in America.” They raise awareness by showing gruesome videos and pictures of animal cruelty, while asking for your money to save these animals. As an animal activist, I want to shed some light on what’s actually going on within this organization. PETA has obtained millions and millions of dollars over the years, yet they spend less than one percent of its multi-million dollar budget actually helping animals.

The group killed more than 1,900 animals in 2003 alone, that’s over 85 percent of the animals they received. In fact, from July 1998 through the end of 2003, PETA killed over 10,000 dogs, cats, and other “companion animals” at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. That’s more than five animals every day. Straight from Activistfacts.com  “PETA technically runs an "animal shelter," though it's more akin to a slaughterhouse. In some years, PETA's kill rate has exceeded 97%. And according to an affidavit filed by a former employee, "We would routinely euthanize healthy puppies and kittens and other highly adoptable animals." PETA tries to justify this by saying that these animals were “too sick” yet they don’t allow for these animals to be properly taken care of or to even be seen by a real doctor, along with showing more gruesome pictures of abused animals to “back up” their statement.

In 2010, a Virginia resident called PETA to ask if they operated an animal shelter. PETA said no. In utter disgust and surprise, she sent PETA’s response to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), the government agency responsible for overseeing shelters and animal welfare matters in the state. Responding to the complaint, Dr. Daniel Kovich, an investigator with the VDACS, conducted an inspection of PETA’s animal shelter at its Virginia headquarters in July 2010. Dr. Kovich determined “the facility does not contain sufficient animal enclosures to routinely house the number of animals annually reported as taken into custody.” This is because most animals taken in by PETA aren’t housed for very long. After reviewing two months worth of records, Kovich found that 245 of the 290 animals–84 percent–that PETA took into custody were killed within 24 hours. Only 17 were reported as adopted or in foster homes.

I called PETA to discuss this matter with them, as soon as I started asking questions about this subject, the man on the phone said that he does not have time to talk and that someone else was calling him, he then proceeded to hang up the phone while I was talking. This embarrassing customer service provided, proves that they are in the the wrong and that they are fully aware of the wrongful actions and cruel organization that they are conducting. Please sign this petition to defund PETA and stop the animal cruelty. DO NOT give them any money! Help us shut them down for good.
