Let's be fair and show the people in our community that we care.
The Issue
Today I ask you to sign my petition to help the unhoused people in our community.
There are so many resources lacking when it comes to dealing with the unhoused. There's a significant need for more shelters both day and night, for more rehabilitation programs including those that will transition people to become self-sufficient and be able to maintain their lives once their circumstances change, there's a desperate need for places where unhoused people can shower, and for many other resources as well. Just to name one of the main resources among many that are lacking right now, is the resources to treat and help maintain the mental wellness of many of the people outside who are suffering from mental illness.
We're looking for change for the unhoused people of the Auburn/Lewiston area. The unhoused residents in the area are not being shown enough compassion we need more resources things cannot continue like this.
In the area right now, there are way over 100 unhoused residents with nowhere to go, sleeping on the ground, on stairs, benches, squatting in abandoned locations, sleeping in tents in the woods, etc some of these people have been unhoused for years. This has been an issue and it's only getting worse.
Due to the pandemic, there are fewer places for them to go during the day as well so life for most is a day outside ALL DAY. There are no shelters they can go to, no beds they can sleep on, they aren't being provided a place to shower, and some don't even have simple things such as a toothbrush. There have been some unhoused people who have been given a voucher but then the apartment they find if they find one needs an "inspection" but there is no inspector in Auburn at this time or lack of, and the list of reasons goes on and on.
In the meantime, the people of this area the people who work/ worked in this area, who lived in this area, that grew up in this area, or have moved from other cities or states to be in this area, those people they're just getting shuffled from one place to another and being told lie after lie having to deal with broken promise after broken promise all while trying and hoping they literally don't FREEZE TO DEATH!
When I went to address the issues of homelessness in the area on November 16, 2021, at the city council meeting I was told things such as on any given day there are "5-7 beds available." 5-7 does NOT house the over 100 people who are unhoused in the area. Some other things that were said in the meeting are that the city knows there is a homelessness issue but that's an issue for the next council and in not so many words it was also said that people chose to continue to be unhoused.
We are dealing with a real problem here people and we need help I want to go back to the city council and address the new mayor in office with the issue of homelessness again and the needs of the people but I'm only one person. I ask you today to please sign this petition so we can make a stand.
Whether you are from the area or across the world we can use your help.
PEOPLE BEING UNHOUSED IS AN EPIDEMIC THAT AFFECTS US ALL!
