PETS ARE NOT PROPERTY! CHANGE STATE LAW TO PREVENT PET ALIENATION FROM LOVING PARENTS!
The Issue
PETS ARE NOT PROPERTY!
In the state of Pennsylvania (and many others), the law currently recognizes pets as property. As such, the court can decide who can retain the pet in a divorce proceeding. Furthermore, spouses can also file to have a pet classified as an "emotional support animal"; an action that can be exercised to further bolster a case in one spouses favor.
The mission is to raise awareness to how the current laws can be leveraged to unethically alienate a pet from his or her caring and loving pet-parent. While there may be legitimate circumstances where custody of a pet should not be shared, this petition only applies to cases where abuse and neglect is not a factor.
The goal is to have the law amended to recognize pets as living things - NOT PROPERTY and thus making custody agreements equitable. A pet should NEVER be used as a proxy against another spouse - yet the current laws allow this to happen. Pets like children, have the right to be with both parents!
