Have you ever wanted an animal so much, but were unable to own it? Maybe you couldn't own it due to allergies, or because you live in a no-pet facility. Or maybe you own a dog or another animal and love it very much. Just imagine that animal being illegal in the state you live in. Hedgehogs are illegal to own in Pennsylvania due to the fear of diseases and the possibility of an owner finding that they don't want the tiny little animal and placing it out in the wild where it would die due to being domesticated. It would not have the ability to survive in the wild, especially in the winter. Domestic hedgehogs will go into a fatal hibernation if the temperature is below 72 degrees. Domesticated hedgehogs' diets consist of high protein, low-fat diets (normally fulfilled with certain cat foods), and a few types of bugs. They can have some fruits and vegetables, but sugar content has to be monitored as hedgehogs are easily prone to obesity. Being out in the wild can screw up a hedgehogs health and it would eventually die. There are people who would love to own a hedgehog but the state laws prevent the ownership of this animal. If anyone were to own one in Pennsylvania illegally, the hedgehog would be confiscated and put to sleep.
