Penn State University's College of Education has decided to close the School Psychologist Training Program at a time when children in the US are in an unprecedented crisis. Nationally, and in PA, there is not only an overwhelming need for mental health support in schools, but a severe shortage of school psychologists.

School psychologists work in a variety of settings from schools and universities, to juvenile justice systems and hospitals. They are trained in everything from data collection and analysis to crisis prevention and response.

The National Association of School Psychologists recommends a ratio of 500 students to 1 school psychologist (500:1). In the 2019-2020 school year, the national ratio was 1,211:1 and in PA, it was 1,078:1; more than double the recommendation! In seven states, the shortage is as severe as 5,000+:1.

Since 2007, the suicide rate among individuals aged 10-24 in the US has increased by 57.4%. This was prior to the COVID-19 pandemic which has resulted in an even greater spike in the mental health needs of our nation's future.

Now is NOT the time to cut a training program that trains professionals who support children in our schools.  Help save this valuable program!
