Pelican traffic lights for Hampstead Heath Station

Pelican traffic lights for Hampstead Heath Station

The Issue

There is a good reason why I think there should be pelican traffic light outside Hampstead Heath train station, London NW3. To all those living in the South End Green part of Hampstead, have any wondered why the zebra crossing outside Hampstead Heath Station does not have a pelican crossing? This must one of a very few zebra crossings outside a very busy station which has no traffic light controls. Each morning and throughout the day, there are whole streams of pedestrians coming out of Hampstead Heath Station who cross that crossing causing long queues of idling vehicles on each side, causing more pollution, when there should be freer moving traffic, while still considering the pedestrians. What really is needed is a situation whereby pedestrians and drivers get an equal share of being able to proceed without a potential accident. I'm astonished that Camden's transport and highways department has done nothing to address this matter, while there are traffic light crossings at Gospel Oak Station, Finchley Road and Frognal Station (right near the Junction of Finchley Road, Lymington Road and Arkwright Road), West Hampstead Station and Brondesbury Station. Even though I am all for clean air and I cycle a lot as well, I would appreciate it if Camden Council could make it easier for motorists in this part of Hampstead. I have telephoned Camden Council twice about this. Also, the junction of Pond Street, Fleet Road, Constantine Road and South End Road could do with a set of traffic lights to alleviate the snarl-ups that occur there and get the traffic flowing more freely.
