Say "No" to the Hybrid Learning Model
Say "No" to the Hybrid Learning Model
The Issue
Peel District School Board has made a decision to move to a hybrid learning model.
What is the “Hybrid Learning Model”
In a hybrid learning model educators teach students in-person, as well as virtually, at the same time. The hybrid model differentiates from the previous school year in that the virtual platform was facilitated by one teacher, while the in-class learning was taught by a different teacher.
The decision was made without the consultation of parents, teachers or students yet they are directly impacted by the outcomes of this decision. The email sent to teachers stated that this decision made by the board was in an effort to create flexible learning environments and to provide cost effective solutions.
We strongly believe that the amalgamation of two profoundly diverse learning methods cannot be combined in a way that will maintain a high quality of education, as well as with limited negative repercussions to the teachers, and ultimately to students.
Cons of the Hybrid Learning Model
-
Teachers are unable to plan for the allocation of resources
-
Teachers attention is split and they may need to choose between providing direct support, tech support and classroom safety
- In-person classrooms are streamed online reducing student privacy
- In-class hands-on activities are minimized to accommodate those at home
- Teachers are unable to move around the class freely as they must ensure that they are always within camera visibility - small group work and responding to student queries at the students desk becomes a challenge
- Teachers without support staff are unable to provide additional assistance/ one-on-one time to students falling behind
- Virtual learning provides elevated safety concerns - In January 2021 the PDSB was hacked with pornographic materials
- Teachers will be burnt out while trying to navigate teaching two classrooms in one unrealistic setting, as well as being expected to provide quality teaching with reduced capacity
- Students may fall behind and become disengaged
Pros of the Hybrid Learning Model
- Creates flexibility for students to remain at home or go into class
- Reduced cost

Following numerous cuts to school funding by the Ford Government, school boards have been placed in a precarious situation leading to decision making based on finances rather than the needs of our children and educators. I urge anyone who strongly feels that our students deserve more than a subpar education to make your voice heard!
