Stop denial of climate change in new Texas textbooks!

Stop denial of climate change in new Texas textbooks!

The Issue

Two major national publishers have drafted new social studies textbooks for K-12 students in Texas that are filled with inaccurate and misleading information about climate change. Since Texas is the nation’s second largest buyer of textbooks, books produced for the state are often sold nationwide.

Publishers McGraw-Hill and Pearson are working on final textbook drafts in advance of a Texas Board of Education public hearing on Tuesday, November 18. The board will vote on which books to approve on Friday, November 21.

If these national publishers know that parents and other education supporters across the country are watching, they'll feel more pressure to correct climate change misinformation. That's why it's important that we speak out now.

Two smaller publishers recently agreed to remove misleading information about climate change in their proposed textbooks after more than 25,000 people took action. But McGraw-Hill and Pearson, the largest and most influential publishers, haven’t yet committed to correct their factually challenged climate content.

It’s crucial that we send a strong message right away to Pearson and McGraw-Hill that the truth is not for sale. Censoring climate science in order to sell books is unethical, an unacceptable disservice to students, and will permanently damage the publishing companies’ reputation with teachers and parents around the country.

Please tell publishers McGraw-Hill and Pearson to immediately correct all factual errors about climate change in social studies textbooks for K-12 students.
