Peabody CEO's Resignation and Parliamentary Debate on Social Housing Rent Increases
The Issue
I am a resident affected by the recent rent increases of 10% and service increases of an astonishing 765% in our social housing. Not only are we burdened with these unjustifiable hikes, but we also face neglect when it comes to necessary repairs or assistance for part-owners. This is not just my story, but the reality for many living under the administration of Peabody.
Peabody's CEO has shown a lack of empathy and understanding towards our plight. We believe that their resignation would be a step forward in addressing this crisis. Furthermore, we call for a debate to be held in Parliament over these alarming rent and service increases in social housing.
According to Shelter England, one in seven renters report that they have no money left after paying rent (Shelter England, 2020). With such drastic increases as those imposed by Peabody, this number is set to rise significantly.
This situation is untenable. We need change now more than ever. It's time for Parliament to intervene and ensure fair rents and adequate services are provided within social housing sector nationwide.
Please sign this petition if you stand with us against unaffordable rent hikes and inadequate services within social housing.
