We live in the most amazing town and are soon to be without Instructional Aides, Reading Interventionists, and ESL staff at our schools. Our Reading Centers were eliminated this year and some students are already suffering.
Next year All Day Kindergarten will be provided with a full time benefited Aide in each classroom. Great, right?!! The problem is in order to make this change they are removing the Instructional Aides from all other grades in the school.
Research proves that "All Day Kindergartners had higher test scores, but the effects wear off quickly. By the start of first grade, the benefits of full-day kindergarten had diminished so as to no longer be statistically significant, in both reading and math. According to Administrators when asked why this happens, they responded, teachers must focus their attentions primarily on those students who come into first grade with little foundational reading and math skills, and thus do not have enough time to work equally as hard with the high-achieving students. Because of this, the gain in academic achievement seen in the full-day kindergarten students gradually erodes with a lack of attention."(http://isminc.com/pdf/research-free/students/2550
This change will have a HUGE impact on the future of our children's education in Park City. If we don't have the staff to support our children's growth, their scores will be reflected accordingly. Each elementary will have only ONE Interventionist with no Aides outside of the kindergarten. The Interventionist position at each elementary school will be dedicated to English as Second Language students and in teaching them how to learn English. This is very different from our vastly experienced and well-trained Reading Specialists and Aides who help ALL students who struggle with HOW TO READ in one-on-one and small group settings. No true research seems to support this decision.
Please use your voice to stop this from happening. These positions will be VERY hard to get back.
