The Issue

Each year, around 435 ball kids play an essential role at the Australian Open yet receive no payment, despite the tournament offering approximately A$111 million in total prize money for 2026. Paying each ball person A$1,000 would cost just A$435,000 — only about 0.39% of total prize money. This amount is less than the A$450,000 paid collectively to just three of the 64 first-round losers, who each receive A$150,000. We respectfully call on Tennis Australia to fairly recognise ball kids’ contribution by introducing a modest payment reflecting the scale and success of the event.
