Pay Teachers Better or End Tenure?

Pay Teachers Better or End Tenure?
The Issue
People should always know exactly what it is they are supporting when they sign a petition. Any petition that says it is about one thing but is really about something entirely different should be removed.
StudentsFirst has a petition that says: "Good Teachers Deserve Decent Pay. Pay Effective Teachers What They Deserve. America's most qualified teachers are grossly underpaid. That's not fair, and it's not good for our kids. Join the fight to make sure good teachers get fair pay."
What StudentsFirst's petition DOESN'T say is that the way they want to make this happen is by eliminating teacher unions, eliminating all tenure and basing the pay of all teachers on unproven, unreliable standardized measures of teacher performance. See their real agenda at http://www.studentsfirst.org/policy-agenda. Here's more about their real agenda - http://thinkprogress.org/education/2011/10/28/356602/students-first-spending-gop.
They don't recognize the reality that many of the things that determine how well kids do at school are out of their teachers' control, that there is no proven way to accurately measure teacher performance and that many existing measures show most teachers can be great one year and stink the next.
Change.org has some great petitions. The one from Students First isn't one of them. It should be taken down.
