We, the undersigned residents, taxpayers, and small business owners of Dormont, formally petition the Dormont Borough Council to halt all progression on the proposed 180-unit high-density transit housing development at the Dormont Junction station lot.
Our community demands a total freeze on the project until the Borough addresses these critical, newly uncovered facts:
Stripping of Public Voting Rights:
The new development code includes a hidden "Similar Use Determination" loophole. This provision grants the unelected Borough Manager the unilateral authority to approve unlisted corporate projects, completely bypassing the Zoning Hearing Board, the Council, and your public right to object.
Severe Traffic Gridlock: Pushing a massive multi-story residential footprint onto this lot will create dangerous bottlenecks in our surrounding school zones and cause permanent daily gridlock along the vital West Liberty Avenue state corridor.
Severe School District Financial Strain: The developer is seeking massive corporate tax breaks via a 10 year LERTA tax freeze. This moves the financial burden directly onto the shoulders of regular homeowners, risking property tax hikes for local families while our classrooms absorb new student enrollment.
Subsurface Mine Subsidence Risks:
Official PA Department of Environmental Protection maps confirm the project site sits directly atop unstable, historical coal mining voids. Excavating a massive foundation and heavy structure here creates unstudied structural safety risks for adjacent neighborhood properties.
OUR GOAL: We demand that the Borough Council immediately introduce a Legislative Text Amendment to repeal the manager's backdoor powers, restore traditional residential zoning protections, and conduct independent, third-party infrastructure audits.
