The Issue

As a school social worker in Ward 8, I have witnessed first-hand the immense value that the DC School Connect transportation service provides to our community. This program has been instrumental in ensuring that students from diverse backgrounds can access quality education without the barriers of transportation obstacles. For many families, this service is not just a means of getting their children to school—it represents a lifeline towards consistent educational access and academic success.

Recently, I became aware of proposed budget cuts that threaten to dismantle this vital service for the 2026-2027 school year. These cuts could have drastic implications, disrupting not only student attendance but also impacting families who rely on this service. The abrupt timeline of these changes does not allow for a smooth transition or alternatives to be established, thereby setting the stage for potential chaos within our education system.

Furthermore, these budget cuts disproportionately affect working families and vulnerable communities across the District. Data has consistently shown that reliable transportation is directly linked to better student attendance and overall educational outcomes. Without it, there is a risk of increasing absenteeism and widening educational disparities among the students who need support the most.

We are calling on the Mayor of DC and other decision-makers to pause these budget cuts. By delaying the proposed changes, we can engage with families, schools, and local communities to explore sustainable and effective solutions. Allowing time for proper planning and adjustment will ensure that educational access remains equitable and that all students continue to benefit from the opportunities that DC School Connect has provided.

Sign this petition to urge our leaders to reconsider the budget allocation and prioritize the futures of our students and community by postponing the decision to cut the DC School Connect transportation service.
