Pause, Breathe, Learn: Bring Daily Mindfulness into Primary Schools

Pause, Breathe, Learn: Bring Daily Mindfulness into Primary Schools
The Issue
Change is possible. As a practicing Mindfulness Teacher, I see the benefits of mindfulness first hand. It becomes a life skill, not just a classroom activity. If children learn early how to pause, notice their thoughts and emotions, and respond rather than react, it can shape how they navigate relationships, learning, and challenges for years to come.
Imagine a future where every child starts their school day with a brief moment of calm reflection.
I am proposing a policy that introduces daily 5-10 minute Mindfulness Practice in Primary Schools, starting from Year 1. These short, assembly-style sessions aim to nurture focus, emotional resilience, and overall wellbeing among young learners.
Research consistently shows that Mindfulness is crucial for improving attention and reducing anxiety in children. According to studies (Kuyken et al. (2013) and Zenner et al. (2014) these demonstrate that school-based Mindfulness programmes enhance concentration and mental wellbeing, further supporting the integration of mindfulness within early primary education. By embedding this simple yet powerful practice in education, we are setting children up for a more balanced and thoughtful future.
Incorporating mindfulness into the daily school routine from an early age is a proactive step towards improving our educational system. The sessions can be seamlessly integrated at the start of the day with Qualified Mindfulness teachers who can correctly guide the children through basic breathing exercises and mindful reflections.
Implementing this program can be introduced by using Teams, Zoom or a short daily visit by a qualified Mindfulness teacher, which can be supported by existing educational budgets.
I urge educational authorities to embrace this initiative. It is a simple yet profound change that can make a difference. Let's empower our children with the tools to manage stress, improve their attention spans, and foster a compassionate school environment. Together, we can create a generation of mindful, empathetic, and resilient individuals, ready to face the world with a calmer, clearer mindset.
Sign this petition to support the implementation of daily mindfulness practices in primary schools and help transform the educational experience for our young ones.
