Petition updateStop the light rail from destroying beautiful Burleigh HeadsReply from state MP for Burleigh Michael Hart LNP

The following question was put to Michael Hart the state LNP member for Burleigh.

"I am writing to voice my disapproval of the proposed light rail link from Broadbeach to Burleigh Heads. The only consultation done by the state government included a questionnaire where there was no option to say NO to the light rail. We were given three options where the rail WOULD go. It was deliberately designed so that the government and council could crow the above misleading figures and claim that locals wanted the light rail.

There is not a traffic problem that needs to be solved between Burleigh and Broadbeach, it takes at most 10 minutes. The Federal LNP have publicly indicated that they have no intention of funding the light rail past Burleigh Heads, so it will never go to the airport. It will not reduce car travel because there is no park and ride, so people have nowhere to park. Only those within walking distance will use it. The LNP would be better off pushing for the heavy rail to be built in the land already put aside for it next to the M1 to relieve congestion on that road.

There are over 15,000 quiet Australians who have signed petitions against this light rail extension, if the LNP fails to stop this madness they will voice their will at the next election. Is the LNP going to stop supporting this transport infrastructure that has no demand?"

Hi reply was as follows:

"You should be venting your frustration at the Labor government not the LNP we are in opposition. So if as you say the people voice their opinion against the LNP for being in opposition they will end up with Labor who are the ones making the decision now. The state government makes these decisions and are the ones that ultimately are responsible to pay for it."

The local member seems to have overlooked that theLNP member for Bonney  (Labrador/Southport) and the shadow Transport Minster, Steve Minnikin, both fronted the media at Helensvale Station on the 24/7/2019 to demand the light rail to Burleigh be progressed.

So there now appears to be no difference between the major parties at a state level in regards to the light rail. You may need to park you vote with an independent to voice your displeasure.
