Change in UCF's GEB courses

The Issue

Business students at UCF are required to take GEB 3006, a career research and planning course. "Each career development class has a unique goal relative to the overall goal of you graduating from our college with a solid employment option." In essence, the goal and idea of this course is great for students, but the execution of it, not so much.Students are required to attend numerous events at various hours of the day in order to earn points that are essential to pass the GEB 3006 class. These events can be very informational for our career/educational goals but they are inconvenient. Although many have landed internships and such from attending events, many have also referred to the class as a "waste of time". Many students are full-time, taking 12-16 credit hours, working a part-time or full-time job and have other various responsibilities that take up time. It is immoral to require students to dedicate numerous hours a week in order to pass a class, especially when they're paying for the class and want to make the most out of it. I believe that students can be provided the same opportunities without it being as inconvenient as it is. Many students commute to campus, it would help to have more opportunities to get points through online connections such as LinkedIn. This would also help with people that struggle with attending events in a set time period.  In addition, students in this course are more focused on obtaining the points to pass this class, rather than actually networking and learning about potential opportunities in their career path. It is also difficult for some to obtain these points. At least a thousand people are enrolled in the course; volunteering opportunities, which provide more points than other activities, fill up quick. They are also booked immediately because students aren't able to attend the other events available. There should be more opportunities, or other activities should be worth more. Dean Paul Jarley making a change within the format of GEB 3006 would really improve college of business student's experience at UCF.
