SAVE THE PATIO

SAVE THE PATIO
The Issue
The old post office in the Village of Pinehurst, NC was a building that sat vacant for years. In 2015, steps were taken to bring this incredible building back to life. The parties involved worked with The Pinehurst Historic Preservation Commission and The State Historic Preservation office to ensure that this piece of Pinehurst history was preserved and could again be enjoyed by our community. This was accomplished by the placement of the Givens Bookstore (where the funds go back to the local library) and The Roast Office Coffee Shop sharing the interior space. Great care, thoughtfulness and attention to detail were made by all to preserve the historical physical features of the building. During the renovation process, a patio was created. The original brown sod and the old bushes that covered the corner plate were removed. Professional landscaping and flower beds were also added, at no cost to the Village or the Historic Society, to increase the beauty of the front of the building as well as to preserve the pre-existing tree. Now, the complete building and the once hidden historical marker can be seen and enjoyed by all. The social hub that once existed in The Village when the post office was open, has been brought back as a result of the Patio and The Roast Office. It can once again be enjoyed by ALL, community and visitors alike!
On August 28th, 2015, the State Historic Preservation Officer, Romona Bartos, and the Environmental Review Coordinator, Renee Gledhill-Early, have decided that the outdoor patio area creates an “adverse effect.” Basically, this means, “Remove the area and bring back the sod.” They want the beautiful patio removed and the original sod to be replaced. The patio would have to be moved to the side of the building. The natural shade of the tree would no longer be utilized for the public. Instead, bulky umbrellas would be necessary, crowding the side greenway.
This is YOUR State Historical Preservation Office! Therefore, we are asking The Village and County citizens, visitors, representatives, local historical society, and Pat McCrory to help stop this mandate and a rush to judgment. We are requesting a waiver to allow what they are calling a “breach in the covenant”. Let your voice be heard! Help us save the patio where it lies now. Let our community continue to enjoy the natural sight and the natural shade that this patio provides! It has already become a part of what the ambiance of Pinehurst, NC is known for! HELP US SAVE THE PATIO! Thank you for your concern and your support!
