Yesterday marked the opening of the 2nd station of the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department’s “Marine Biodiversity Roving Exhibition” where they will display an informative exhibit about the various awesome creatures that call our seas home. From July 8-12th you can visit it at Landmark North in Sheung Shui. I do encourage people to check it out! More information can be found at: http://www.afcd.gov.hk/english/conservation/con_mar/con_mar_edu/hkmb2017.html In June, I visited the 1st station that was located in Sunshine City in Ma On Shan. I went on the last day as hopefully there would be less people and I could ask some questions. I arrived a bit early that day and it was still fenced off. So, I noted the opening hours of 11am to 8pm and decided to return later in the day. I arrived just before 7pm and unfortunately it seemed they had closed it early or didn’t even open at all. The exhibit still had the same barrier and there was not a single person around to staff it. I don’t know if AFCD knew their staff left early, but it sure would have been nice to be able to view the exhibit up-close rather than from behind a security fence. It also would have been nice to have the chance to ask their staff some questions. Anyway, by squinting my eyes, I was still able to view the information from behind the barrier. There was lots of information about some of the cool critters that inhabit our waters and a little bit on conservation. But, there was not a single piece of information about marine waste and its massive threat to marine conservation. Does the AFCD not know about the severe threat microplastics cause to the wonderful coral communities mentioned in the exhibit? How about all the floating plastic bags and ghost nets in our waters that can kill the likes of the Chinese White Dolphin? It also had a devoted display at their exhibition. Fiddler crabs and the Horseshoe crabs that they focus on at the exhibit will mistake micro-plastics or the bits of expanded polystyrene that plague our shores as food. How can the AFCD possibly achieve their vision “to see our community enjoy a reliable and plentiful supply of safe and high quality fresh food and a well managed natural environment, which we can pass on to our future generations”? They won’t even talk about the greatest threat to our natural environment and our fisheries. By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish (http://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/blog/2017/04/feature-uns-mission-to-keep-plastics-out-of-oceans-and-marine-life/). The roving exhibit has information educating about the AFCD’s conservation strategies. But obviously educating about the marine waste issue still is of no importance to them since there was nothing included about it. The roving exhibition would be a perfect opportunity for them to change their ways and start. Several months before, Patrick Lai replied to a letter and informed me that there could be something included about marine waste at the new Hoi Ha Wan Visitor Centre. I read that letter with caution. And obviously based on the lack of education about marine waste at their roving exhibition, I have doubts about their plans. Construction begins next month. Please Patrick if you and the AFCD are serious about marine waste and protecting our natural environment, then you got to start educating. You can begin by adding information about the problem to your roving exhibition. And also if you don’t mind, please ensure your staff keep the exhibition open for the indicated operating hours.
