Happy New Year to everyone! My new year's resolution is to declare war on waste. How about you?
I started the year out right by bringing the battle back to Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park on January 1st. I paddled over to a beach that sees less visitors and cleaned up an 80' stretch of sand. There was quite a bit of waste over there. In fact, there is a lot all around the marine park. While paddling to the the site I found rubber gloves, plastic water bottles, and wrappers floating in the water. You just need to get out into the marine park to see it. So if anyone wants to tell me that marine waste is not a problem in Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park, please prove it to me.
Once ashore I was greeted by a "nice" bright pink algal bloom or red tide. You can see an example of it at https://www.facebook.com/makarasurf/photos/a.454856001290066.1073741829.449987345110265/1066301220145538/?type=3&theater. Ironic to see a red plastic bag floating in the mess. But, no the pink is not from colour leaching out of the bag as there were three separately affected areas with the red tide that day in Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park.
I've added more shots to my waste map at https://www.makarasurf.com/content/shaping-change/#mapping-waste. This week I intend to paddle out to search for more sites around Sai Kung and build the database further. If you want to help out, please simply upload your own marine waste photos to my Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/makarasurf) and add the tag #shapingchange to it. Don't forget to include the location and date the photo was taken.
Please keep sharing the petition on your social media so we can keep building support for this. Thanks so much!
