Paternity Fraud Must Be Criminalized By Ghana's Parliament

The Issue

The Heartbreaking Story of Kwesi Nyarko

Kwesi Nyarko, a middle-aged Fante man, once thought he had eeverythig.A loving wife, two beautiful children, and a stable career as a teacher in Cape Coast. For 15 years, he poured his heart, soul, and every cedi he earned as a teacher and transport business owner into providing for his family. His children were his pride, and it was glaring by how he cared for them.

But his world came crashing down one fateful day when a heated argument with his wife led her to reveal a secret that shattered his reality. The children he had lovingly raised were not his. Devastated, Kwesi sought answers, and DNA tests confirmed his worst fear.indeed,he was not the biological father of any of the children.

The betrayal was too much for him to bear. Kwesi spiraled into depression, questioning his worth and blaming himself for not recognizing the signs earlier. His wife, unrepentant, left him, taking the children with her and leaving Kwesi to grapple with the emotional wreckage alone.

He lose his faith in God and attempted suicide multiple times. He hardly goes to work and risks losing his job.

Kwesi’s story is not unique. Across Ghana, countless men suffer in silence, victims of paternity fraud with no legal recourse or support systems. Their voices are unheard, their pain dismissed, and their lives forever altered by this cruel deception.

It is time for change. Parliament must act now to criminalize paternity fraud, protect victims like Kwesi, and ensure that no man suffers this level of betrayal without justice.
