The Issue

Growing up, I watched how school sports not only molded young athletes but also taught them valuable life skills, from teamwork and resilience to dedication and leadership. These opportunities, which I passionately believe every child should have, are currently denied to homeschool students in Oklahoma.

The Tim Tebow Law holds the key to changing that. It would grant homeschool students access to participate in public school extracurricular activities, including sports and sanctioned events. Such inclusion is not only a matter of fairness, but also of offering these children the wholesome developmental opportunities that come with team involvement.

Data from the Home School Legal Defense Association shows that over 30 states have already enacted laws similar to the Tim Tebow Law. For example, in states like Florida and Indiana, homeschool students who take part in public school activities have shown remarkable personal growth and have added value to their teams and communities.

Passing this law in Oklahoma would level the playing field and provide homeschooled students with equal opportunities, enabling them to chase their dreams both on and off the field. It's an equitable solution that benefits not only the students but also the greater community by nurturing diverse talents and bolstering inclusivity.

By signing this petition, you are championing for every homeschool student in Oklahoma to have access to the same resources, support, and platforms for personal development as their peers in public schools. Let us urge local lawmakers to take a stand for our children, the future leaders and innovators of our community. Together, we can make this change possible.   The "Tim Tebow Law" refers to proposed or enacted state legislation allowing homeschooled students to participate in public school extracurricular activities, like sports, band, and clubs, similar to how Heisman-winning quarterback Tim Tebow played football while being homeschooled in Florida. These laws, often called "Equal Access Bills," aim to give homeschooled children access to activities funded by their parents' taxes, requiring them to meet the same academic and behavioral standards as public school students. While many states have such laws, legislation is still debated in others like Oklahoma and Mississippi, with differing opinions among homeschool advocates.
