The Safer Communities Act will create common-sense gun-control protections that could prevent future mass shooting tragedies. The Senate needs to pass it now.

I listened in horror to the story of the Pulse nightclub shooting in 2016 as I drove across the desert on a road trip to the Grand Canyon. I've never felt completely safe at LGBT events or venues since.

The bill contains these commonsense measures:

• improved background checks for young gun purchasers
• Funding for states to implement "red-flag" laws that take guns out of the hands of people deemed dangerous by a judge
• Improved protection for victims of domestic violence
• Funding for mental health and school safety
• Tougher penalties for illegal gun purchases

There's more to do, but these measures are a start to make our communities safer and free from violence.
