Pass the Overpackaging Prohibition Act to Combat Microplastic Pollution

Pass the Overpackaging Prohibition Act to Combat Microplastic Pollution
The Issue
Issue
The rise in microplastic pollution is creating an immense global problem at present. Microplastics have been found in every ecosystem on earth, ranging from terrestrial to aquatic environments, and even inside humans (Browne et al., 2011; Savchuk, 2025). The majority of microplastics are the result of everyday plastic waste breaking down into micro-sized particles through various processes (Jambeck et al., 2015).These broken down microplastics present great potential threats to populations of fish, other living organisms and humans alike (Vieri et al., 2024; Yee et al., 2021). Immediate action on behalf of all governments will be necessary for solving this problem.
- Stop Excessive Plastic Packaging Now
Overpackaging significantly increases plastic waste, which eventually breaks down into microplastics and spreads throughout the environment.
- Reduce Harmful Single-Use Plastics
Disposable plastics persist in the environment for decades, continuously fragmenting into microplastics that threaten ecosystems.
- Hold Corporations Accountable for Plastic Waste
Without strict regulations, companies have little incentive to reduce plastic production, allowing pollution to continue unchecked.
If we don't do something about it NOW, we will continue to wait until it becomes worse than it is, and it will continue to damage our ecosystems and give us more health issues.
