Pass the False Allegations Accountability Act

Pass the False Allegations Accountability Act
The Issue
Every year in the United States, countless men and women are falsely accused of crimes or misconduct they did not commit. These false allegations don’t just damage reputations, they destroy families, careers, mental health, and in some cases, lives.
Currently, our legal system does little to hold false accusers accountable. While filing a false police report or lying under oath is technically illegal, these charges are almost never enforced. If the allegations happen in family court, the workplace, or on social media, the only option for the falsely accused is to spend thousands of dollars fighting an uphill battle in defamation court. For most people, that is simply not possible.
False allegations are not harmless. Studies show that men falsely accused of crimes, especially in cases of abuse or assault, are at a significantly higher risk of suicide. Families have been torn apart, children alienated from loving parents, and innocent people driven to despair with no path to clear their name.
That’s why we are calling on lawmakers to pass the False Allegations of Accountability Act.
VIEW THE PROPOSED LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORK
What the Act Does
1. Establishes Equal Criminal Penalties
- Anyone who makes an allegation of a serious crime that is knowingly false or made with reckless disregard for the truth will face the same maximum penalty as the crime alleged. Example: A false rape allegation could carry up to 20 years in prison.
2. Extends Accountability
- Covers false allegations made not only to police, but also in family court filings, child protective services reports, workplaces, schools, licensing boards, social media, public platforms, and to family.
3. Recognizes Severe Harm
If a false allegation directly contributes to serious outcomes, penalties are stacked on top of the base sentence:
- Suicide resulting in death → +15 years
- Attempted suicide causing permanent disability → +15 years
- Attempted suicide causing temporary harm → +5 years
- Violence incited by false allegations (death or serious harm) → +15 years; minor harm → +5 years
- Property damage caused by false allegations → +10 years (major), +5 years (moderate), +2 years (minor)
4. Provides Civil Remedies
- Victims may recover damages for attorney’s fees and court costs, lost wages and employment opportunities, reputational harm, emotional suffering and full restitution for any property damage.
5. Protects True Victims
- This law does not punish good-faith reports that cannot be proven.
- Prosecutors must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the allegation was knowingly false or made with reckless disregard for the truth.
- Punishing false accusers strengthens, rather than weakens, the credibility of real survivors.

We Demand Action
We, the undersigned, call on lawmakers at the state and federal levels to sponsor and pass the False Allegations Accountability Act.
This law is not about silencing victims. It is about protecting truth, fairness, and justice for all. Every false allegation wastes critical resources, destroys innocent lives, and makes it harder for real survivors to be heard.
It’s time to stand up for accountability. It’s time to create a law that ensures the falsely accused have protection and that those who weaponize false allegations face real consequences.
Please sign and share this petition. Together, we can bring awareness to lawmakers and demand change.
