The Issue

Too many vulnerable people are suffering in silence behind closed doors. The Dignity in Care Act will ensure patients in long-term care facilities are treated with dignity, respect, and compassion — even when they can no longer speak for themselves.

Imagine watching the person you love suffer and knowing that you couldn’t do anything about it — not because you didn’t care, but because the law stood in your way.

That’s what happened to me. I watched my partner deteriorate in hospice care from hundreds of miles away, with no consistent updates, limited access, and heartbreaking uncertainty. When I tried to use a two-way camera to stay connected to him and speak with him as his cognitive function declined, I was told I couldn’t — because staff might be overheard.

This is happening every day in nursing homes and hospice facilities across America. The people entrusted to care for our most vulnerable are shielded by laws that were never meant to apply in these settings — while patients are left voiceless and families are left powerless.

The Dignity in Care Act changes that.

  • It requires annual training in dementia and end-  of-life care for all staff.
  • It protects the use of in-room audiovisual devices for live communication and oversight.
  • It ensures staff can’t reduce care or retaliate just because a camera is present.
  • And it says: if something goes wrong, families have the right to know.

This bill is inspired by one man — but it stands for thousands. Please help us honor those who can no longer fight for themselves. Sign and share to tell our legislators:

  • Dignity doesn’t end when someone enters a nursing home.
  • Communication is not surveillance.
  • Families deserve access, and patients deserve protection.
