The Issue

We call on lawmakers to pass the Tanya Tankou Campus Accountability and Survivors Protection Act, a bill that would finally hold colleges and universities accountable when they ignore, cover up, or enable sexual assault by campus employees.

Inspired by the USC scandal involving Dr. George Tyndall, and survivor Tanya Tankou’s own experience, this bill will close dangerous loopholes and create real protections for students nationwide.

My name is Tanya Tankou. I am a survivor of the USC sexual assault scandal involving campus gynecologist Dr. George Tyndall.  Like hundreds of other students, I trusted my university.  I trusted and believed every service USC provided, including health care, was safe.  But what I didn’t know was that USC had known for years about abuse happening in their own health center, and they did nothing.

This is not just a story about one doctor. It is a story about systemic failure. About schools prioritizing reputation over safety. About silencing survivors and allowing abuse to continue for decades. I am not the only one, and I will not be the last if nothing changes.

That’s why I’m fighting for legislation that could have protected me, and can protect others.

The Tanya Tankou Campus Accountability and Survivors Protection Act would:

Require schools to report all faculty/staff sexual misconduct to an independent oversight agency, not just handle it internally.

Mandate regular external reviews of campus health providers like Dr. Tyndall.Guarantee survivors receive trauma-informed care, legal support, and protection from retaliation.Allow survivors to sue institutions that conceal abuse, with extended time to file claims if there was a cover-up.Enforce semi-annual public reporting of sexual assault data in plain language.

This bill is unique because it doesn’t just make suggestions, it creates consequences. It’s time to put power back in the hands of survivors and take it away from institutions that quietly protect predators.

Join me in calling on state and federal lawmakers to pass this bill. Let’s make sure no one else has to suffer in silence the way I did.
