Families living in Hudson County are bearing the brunt of the health hazards and safety risks posed by nonessential helicopter rides. These helicopter tours, which often fly over our densely populated neighborhoods and critical infrastructure, expose us to unnecessary noise pollution, environmental harm, and potential safety issues. Moreover, they intrude into the peace of our lives and cast shadows over our children's playgrounds. 

While we continue the fight to ensure helicopters are not permitted to operate over our neighborhoods and homes, tour companies continue their flights and dodge the real costs of their operations. This is where NJ Senate Bill S-4639/Assembly Bill A6037 comes into play.

The Bill proposes to tax nonessential helicopter rides, redirecting the tax proceeds to fund New Jersey Transit. This initiative is crucial as NJ Transit is in dire need of diversified revenue streams to maintain and upgrade its services. By taxing helicopter tours, not only do we make them accountable for their impact on our communities, but we also contribute to the improvement of a vital public service.

According to the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, helicopter noise cause significant stress and disturb daily activities, impacting the mental and physical health of families. Moreover, safety reports from the FAA highlight the increased risk of accidents in crowded skies, as observed in the incidents that occurred in Washington and over the Hudson River in early 2025, which is a direct threat to our communities

We must act now to contain this menace. Tour operators who cut corners must pay their fair share of the price. Passing NJ Senate Bill S-4639 /A6037 is a necessary step towards achieving justice and relief for the affected families in Hudson County and surrounding areas.
