Pass NC SB 707 to let NC law enforcement retire at 25 years with full benefits

Pass NC SB 707 to let NC law enforcement retire at 25 years with full benefits
The Issue
I have dedicated 20 years of my life to serving and protecting the community as a law enforcement officer in North Carolina. During this time, I have faced countless challenges, witnessed distressing situations, and supported victims through traumatic experiences. Each officer who serves in law enforcement dedicates their lives to ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities. This profession, while rewarding, demands a heavy emotional and physical toll, making a 30-year service requirement before retirement daunting and, frankly, detrimental to an individual's health and overall well-being.
In North Carolina, the current system requires law enforcement officers to serve for 30 years before they can retire with full benefits. This requirement does not take into consideration the specific challenges and stresses that come with serving in law enforcement. The physical demands and mental strain of continually confronting trauma are immense, and compelling officers to work three full decades before retirement puts their health and safety in jeopardy.
Statistics show that first responders experience higher rates of mental health issues, including PTSD, depression, and anxiety, compared to the general population. Forcing officers to stay on duty for 30 years only exacerbates these conditions, as it prolongs exposure to traumatic events, making recovery and healing increasingly difficult.
We must challenge the status quo and protect those who protect us. I propose passing legislation that allows law enforcement officers in North Carolina to retire after 25 years of service with full benefits. By reducing the years required for retirement, we can show our appreciation for what they endure each day and ensure that they have the opportunity to enjoy a healthier retirement life.
A move to alter the retirement requirements will help retain and recruit talented officers, a crucial aspect of maintaining safety and security in our communities. Furthermore, it's a show of gratitude and respect for their unwavering commitment and sacrifice.
Join me in urging our state leaders and legislators to recognize the unique challenges of law enforcement personnel and enact a bill that allows these heroes to retire with dignity after 25 years. Sign this petition to support our officers and create a sustainable future for those serving in law enforcement.
