My daughter Meila is autistic. She has faced significant challenges in her educational journey due to systemic failures and disputes between educators and administration. During a recent school dispute, Meila was excluded from essential educational activities, lost access to valuable learning opportunities, and had her support services severely reduced. This experience was not only devastating for Meila but also for our family as we observed her falling behind her peers and losing confidence.

Meila’s situation is, unfortunately, not unique. Many parents of children with disabilities encounter similar obstacles, where conflicts between school officials lead to disruptions in their child's education. These conflicts can result in reduced services, lack of proper communication with families, and inadequate participation of key staff members in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings. All these factors contribute significantly to the child’s welfare and academic success, or lack thereof.

This is why we are calling for the implementation of Meila’s Law. This legislation will address these pressing issues by mandating full participation of relevant staff in IEP meetings, ensuring that parents are consistently informed and involved, and safeguarding children with disabilities from the negative impacts of adult disputes. The law aims to create a more inclusive and accountable system within our schools.

Statistics indicate that students with disabilities are already at a disadvantaged position within the educational system. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, students with disabilities are less likely to graduate high school, with an average graduation rate of about 67% compared to 83% for their non-disabled peers. Meila's Law seeks to mitigate such disparities by providing a stable and supportive educational environment.

This is not just about one child or one family; it's about ensuring fairness, respect, and justice for every student navigating the complexities of disabilities within our school systems. It’s time to act and show our commitment to protecting and uplifting all students, especially those most vulnerable.
