Pass legislation for officer accountability in Michigan

Pass legislation for officer accountability in Michigan
The Issue
The Issue
Across Michigan and the United States, communities have seen growing concern about accountability when rights are violated and taxpayers end up paying the financial cost. When misconduct occurs, settlements can reach hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars — paid not by the individuals responsible, but by the public.
This creates frustration, loss of trust, and division between communities and law enforcement.
Most officers serve honorably and ethically. However, when serious misconduct occurs, there must be meaningful accountability. Accountability protects both citizens and the many officers who do their jobs correctly.
Taxpayers should not automatically bear the financial burden for violations of rights.
Michigan has an opportunity to lead the nation by creating policies that strengthen trust, fairness, and responsible policing.
We are calling for legislation that:
• Allows civil actions against officers who knowingly or recklessly violate rights
• Limits taxpayer-funded payments when misconduct is intentional or in bad faith
• Requires professional liability insurance for officers
• Increases transparency in use of force, complaints, and discipline
• Establishes clear consequences for serious misconduct
Accountability strengthens public safety — it does not weaken it. Trust between communities and law enforcement grows when fairness exists for everyone.
Michigan deserves a system where responsibility, transparency, and justice work together.
By signing this petition, you are supporting responsible policing, protecting taxpayers, and helping build stronger trust between communities and law enforcement.
Join us in calling for meaningful accountability and a safer future for Michigan.
