Pass Ian Alert to Protect Children with Autism in TN

Pass Ian Alert to Protect Children with Autism in TN
The Issue
My grandson has Autism, and like many families, I've lived through the gut-wrenching fear that a child who doesn't respond to their own name, who may wander off without warning, can vanish without a trace. Families like ours need the peace of mind that, should the unthinkable happen, there is a system in place to ensure the safe and swift return of our precious children. This is why the Ian Alert could be a lifesaver.
The Ian Alert system is an emergency notification program specifically designed to quickly mobilize resources when a child with Autism goes missing. This type of alert leverages existing Amber Alert networks and refines the criteria and response for children with Autism, who may have unique communication and sensory needs.
In Tennessee, around 32,000 individuals are diagnosed with Autism, and as many as half of these children are prone to wandering, according to nation-wide statistics. Without a specialized alert system, these children are at greater risk of harm from traffic-related incidents, drowning, or exposure to extreme weather conditions. Communities that have adopted similar systems have seen a dramatic increase in the efficiency and response times of search and rescue efforts.
The Ian Alert would enable law enforcement to coordinate more effectively and allow the community to instantly participate in a wide-scale search operation. It would also train first responders in handling potential crises involving children with Autism more empathetically and efficiently.
Passing the Ian Alert into law in Tennessee will not only safeguard our children but will also serve as a compassionate reminder that each child matters, and as a community, we are committed to protecting them. Let's chart a course for safety by ensuring that should our loved ones wander, they will be returned safely to their families.
Please stand with me and bring the Ian Alert system to Tennessee. Sign this petition to urge our state legislators to prioritize the safety and well-being of children with Autism by passing the Ian Alert into law.
