Pass/Fail at UTRGV Fall 2020

The Issue

Hello all,

As the pandemic is still happening, UTRGV is continuing online learning for the fall of 2020 semester. This pandemic has had long-term negative effects on many of us, including unemployment, poor physical and mental health, a big change in our living circumstances, and  difficulty with internet access.

In the spring semester of 2020, most schools had to apply the Pass/Fail system due to the chaos that happened in the middle of the semester. However, some reverted to the normal grading policy this fall. Unfortunately, this semester isn't ordinary as most students are finding virtual learning more challenging than in-person learning, and most of the students are going through anxiety, uncertainty, and stress. The burden of the pandemic has not disappeared. As released from the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment: "We are in a pandemic. Still. Do not forget that it is also an inequitable pandemic."

Considering our issues, I would like to introduce the idea of having this fall semester graded with an optional Pass/Fail grading system. This system would help students to alleviate their stress, cope with their circumstances, and save their academic standing. I hope that everyone stays safe and well, and good luck with your studies!
